Apple May Team Up With OpenAI or Anthropic to Fix Siri

Apple is reportedly rethinking how it will upgrade Siri, its long-time voice assistant. Instead of continuing to build its own AI system from scratch, the company is now in talks with OpenAI (the makers of ChatGPT) and Anthropic (makers of Claude).

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has spoken to both companies about using their AI tools to improve Siri. Apple has even asked them to create versions of their models that can run on Apple’s servers. These discussions are still early, but they show Apple is considering a new direction.

Siri Has Struggled for Years

Siri was one of the first voice assistants to hit the market. But over time, it fell behind newer, smarter tools like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. While Siri can handle simple tasks like setting alarms or sending texts, it often fails at more complex conversations or understanding context.

In 2024, Apple promised a major Siri upgrade. But since then, progress has been slow. Apple’s in-house AI team has faced challenges building a new model that works with Siri’s old system. As a result, the planned Siri revamp has been delayed and may not launch until spring 2026, or even later.

A Big Shift for Apple

Apple hasn’t decided to outsource Siri’s brain to OpenAI or Anthropic, but if they do, it’s going to be huge. This is because they are known to build all of their software in-house, rather than outsourcing it to third-party companies. All these speculations show that Apple might be struggling to keep up fast-growing world of AI development.

If Apple decides to take this route, it will speed things up. Partnering with a company that already has a strong AI model could help Apple bring a smarter Siri to iPhones more quickly.

What Happens Next?

At the moment, the American tech giant is developing a large language model nicknamed “LLM Siri.” While the development is going on, there is pressure on Apple to improve Siri as soon as possible. This might be why they are relying on OpenAI or Anthropic for a quicker solution.

Users have been waiting for a better Siri for a long time now, and if Apple wants to still be relevant in the race, they should suspend this “work alone” at least for the meantime.
