Huawei is taking a huge step towards making its smartphone camera technology independent. The company now makes its own camera sensors in an effort to reduce its dependence on the likes of Sony and Samsung.

Huawei Makes Its Own Camera Sensors to Reduce Dependence

Two new sensors are currently in the works. They are codenamed SC5A0CS and SC590XS. Both offer 50-megapixel resolution and use Huawei’s well known RYYB (Red-Yellow-Yellow-Blue) color filter. This design helps capture more light than the traditional RGB filter. As a result, it improves photo quality, especially in low light environments.

The SC5A0CS sensor will have 1-inch diameter. It’s said to be the main camera of the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra. A sensor this size can provide more detail, dynamic range, and depth—perfect for flagship photography.

The SC590XS sensor is also a bit smaller, at 1/1.3 inches. It will be used as a telephoto sensor, so it will be optimized for zoom and distance photography. It uses the new SuperPixGain HDR2.0 technology from Huawei. Rather than combining images shot at varying exposures, HDR2.0 combines three images that were shot at one exposure. It minimizes ghosting and preserves sharpness of detail in light and dark regions.

Huawei Moves Toward Self-Reliance with New Camera Sensors

With its production of in house sensors, Huawei is attempting to compete directly with mobile camera pioneers. In-house components provide the company with more control over performance and quality. They also remove risks associated with supply chain constraints or trade barriers.

The new sensors will debut on the Huawei Mate 80 series. It is the beginning of a new era in how Huawei thinks about smartphone cameras.

Huawei’s move is a reflection of its enthusiasm for innovation and autonomy. It no longer depends on someone else’s technology—it is going out on its own. That can translate to even more blending of camera hardware and Huawei’s cutting edge image processing software.
