Apple is set to release a new model known as the iPhone 17 Air. It will be the thinnest iPhone ever produced, but with a disadvantage—reduced battery life.

As per The Information, Apple’s tests indicate that only 60–70% of users can keep their phones alive for a full day without having to charge them. The other iPhone 17 variants provide all-day battery life to 80–90% of users. The cause of the shorter battery life is the very thin form factor. The iPhone 17 Air measures only 5.5 mm in thickness, the thinnest Apple phone to date.
Apple will offer an optional battery case to help those who need extra battery. The case will offer extra battery life along with protection for the phone. Apple hasn’t sold battery cases since the iPhone 11 series. For newer models, it has sold the MagSafe Battery Pack, but now that item is out of stock.
Manufacturers are unsure about the sales record of the iPhone 17 Air. The new appearance can attract some buyers, but others will be put off because of battery issues. Because of such uncertainty, Apple is starting off with low manufacturing. Only 10% of the whole iPhone 17 model will initially be the Air variant.
iPhone 17 Air will also differ from the current Air model in a few other ways. It will have just one rear camera and one speaker. It will lack a physical SIM card slot and will be completely dependent on eSIM technology. Apple will release the iPhone 17 Air in September 2025. The phone’s slim body will attract individuals who prefer thin and lightweight phones. The compromise on features and battery life might disappoint some users, however.
The iPhone 17 Air shows that Apple wants to be creative with its design. But it also leaves us questioning how much users will compromise for the sake of a thinner phone.
