The antitrust case against Google in the US is sending shockwaves in the technology sector. Among the key figures in the case is DuckDuckGo CEO Gabriel Weinberg. Weinberg recently testified that Google’s browser, Chrome, would be worth as much as $50 billion if it were available for sale.

Weinberg said that this amount is an “approximate figure.” He also went on to say that DuckDuckGo lacks the financial means to buy Chrome. However, he said that if the circumstances were appropriate, DuckDuckGo would consider it. Other tech firms have also expressed interest. Some firms like OpenAI and Perplexity have said that they are willing to purchase Chrome if it went on sale. This shows how valuable the browser is and how popular it would be if it were ever to be sold.

The case itself is supported by the U.S. Department of Justice. It was in the news when Judge Amit Mehta stated that Google had created a monopoly in the search engine market. After this ruling, there were discussions about sanctioning it. One of the proposals was to force Google to sell Chrome. But nothing has been finalized yet.

Google resists selling Chrome, however. The company has said it will appeal any court decision compelling them to sell the browser. That resistance reflects how central Chrome is to Google’s business model. It also suggests the level of control Google maintains over the broader internet ecosystem.
