OpenAI’s ChatGPT is becoming one of the most widely used AI tools in the world. The chatbot now receives over 2.5 billion user requests each day. Of those, around 330 million come from users in the United States. This data was first reported by Axios and later confirmed by OpenAI spokesperson Rob Friedlander in a statement to The Verge.

If the pace continues, ChatGPT can get more than 912 billion requests within a year. That’s a whopping number by any measure. Even though it is still far from Google, which gets around 5 trillion searches annually, the rapid growth of ChatGPT means that it can be the real contender in the not-so-distant future.

ChatGPT’s user base is growing very fast. The chatbot had around 300 million weekly users in December 2024. It reached more than 500 million in March 2025. That surge indicates the pace at which humans are adopting AI tools in their lives.

ChatGPT Now Handles Billions of Requests Daily—Here’s What’s Next

OpenAI is not stopping at a chatbot. The company is going further and preparing to make its entry to contend head-on with technology giants like Google. OpenAI has been preparing to launch an AI-powered web browser, as a Reuters report last week said. It will come in a few weeks. It will be capable of competing with mainstream browsers like Google Chrome and Edge.

Moreover, OpenAI has also released a new feature called ChatGPT Agent. The tool can perform tasks directly on your computer, such as opening files, managing emails, or exploring the software. It’s an excellent move towards advancing ChatGPT from just a chat tool to an entire virtual assistant.

The heavy usage, fast expansion, and added functionality put OpenAI at the head of technology firms. Although Google is still leading in web search, it is now contending strongly with a fast-growing powerful AI assistant.

As OpenAI keeps evolving, the way we search, browse, and make use of digital tools could be revolutionized. ChatGPT is not yet at Google’s level, but it is becoming something to be reckoned with.
