Apple is thinking big with its upcoming iPhone 17 series. For the first time, some models will have 12 GB of RAM. This is arriving when the iPhone 17 series launches in the fall of 2025. However, only the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will have this extra memory.
iPhone 17 Pro to Feature 12 GB RAM for Faster Performance
The bump up to 12 GB of RAM is a significant enhancement. It will cause things to function more smoothly in a variety of ways. Users can expect easier multitasking, better gaming, and AI app support. As phones tackle more demanding tasks, more memory is extremely valuable.
Apple Boosts iPhone 17 Pro with 12 GB RAM
Samsung is to be the main provider of RAM for the upcoming iPhones. Reports from South Korea say that Samsung will be producing about 70% of the DRAM modules. That does not come as a surprise. Samsung is already supplying OLED displays for iPhones and is a trusted partner of Apple.
The rest of the RAM will be provided by SK hynix and Micron. SK hynix will team up with LG Innotek, while Micron will work with Shinko Electric of Japan. These companies will provide the rest 30% of the memory needed.
Base models will retain 8 GB — for the time being. The regular iPhone 17 and the new iPhone 17 Air will likely have 8 GB of RAM. But perhaps not. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says Apple could increase the Air model to 12 GB. That depends on how robust the memory supply chain is.
Apple’s move to expand RAM is a good indicator. New features, especially AI, will be helped along by more memory. Only Pro users will see the benefit now, but as apps get more demanding, larger RAM might just become the norm for all iPhones. What do you think about this change?
