It has been nearly two years since Meta released its Quest 3 mixed-reality (XR) headset and the world awaits what the company has in store for its successor. A new report is now exploring the possibility that a new XR wearable could make its way to the market later this year.
Meta is yet again leading the world of wearables with its devices, and this reported release will look to trump possible rivals shaping up in the industry.
For many years, Meta has captured the world with its undeniably popular wearables that are fit for different needs, including the smart glasses for everyday use and the Quest for heavier immersion.
New Meta XR Glasses Reportedly Coming Later This Year
Mark Gurman’s latest Power On newsletter via Bloomberg shared a current development over at Meta that is expected to arrive later this year, and it is an update to its smart glasses, giving it more advanced capabilities.
Gurman has dubbed this as XR glasses from Meta that will reportedly be the typical smart glasses that it already offers but with a new display. It will reportedly be coming later this year.
It was revealed that Meta is rushing to bring these new smart glasses to the public to get ahead of Apple’s rumored development of similar smart glasses.
That being said, Meta still has the edge over Apple as it has proven itself over the years that it can deliver a pair of smart glasses to users in the form of the Meta Ray-Ban.

Is This the Meta Quest 3’s Successor?
As revealed on Gurman’s report, this will not be the Meta Quest 3’s successor. It remains unknown why the wearable said to be coming this year from Meta has been described as XR glasses, but the said new display may be what changes its status from an AR-esque wearable.
With the addition of the display, Meta will reportedly offer these upgraded smart glasses starting at around $1,000, according to Gurman.
Meta’s Wearables Are Expanding
It has been nearly two years since the last development from the Quest lineup when Meta released the Quest 3 headset, bringing its first-ever take on mixed reality that combines both virtual and augmented reality.
While the company followed it up last year with the cheaper version known as the Quest 3S, both devices have yet to see a follow up to the lineup.
That being said, the company has also worked with EssilorLuxotica for two versions of the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses. Recent upgrades gave it wide access to Meta AI that helps in visually identifying what is seen on the cameras, as well as the capability to post directly on Instagram without a smartphone.
Previous roadmap leaks revealed that Meta has a lot more in store for the evolution of its mixed reality developments, as well as the smart glasses that will supposedly get a successor later this year.
Alongside this, Meta is also working on Project Orion’s development, its so-called “true” AR glasses that is touted to be the first real one in the industry to offer the technology.
