Google Maps Just Got a Fresh Redesign for Android

April 28, 2025
If you use Google Maps on Android, you might notice something different the next time you open it. Google is finally rolling out a new look for the “You” and “Contribute” tabs — and honestly, it’s a nice little upgrade.
Earlier this year, Google started testing these changes. Now, they’re going live for everyone on the latest version of Maps.
What’s Changed?
Before this update, when you tapped on the “You” or “Contribute” tabs, they took over the whole screen. Not anymore.
Now, those pages open on a floating sheet, kind of like a pop-up that leaves the map visible in the background. It’s a small thing, but it makes a big difference. You still see a bit of the map at the top of your screen, which keeps you feeling connected to where you are, even when you’re not actively using the map.
The “You” tab (where you find your lists and saved places) works the same way. Same content, just a cleaner, less overwhelming layout.
You can also swipe down to minimize the sheet. When you do that, it docks neatly at the bottom, and the full map comes back — search bar, filters, directions button, everything ready to go.
The “Contribute” tab got the same treatment too. One small catch: when the page is expanded, the search bar is hidden. It only shows up when you dock it at the bottom. Also, the page title is now left-aligned instead of sitting in the middle. A tiny tweak, but it makes the design feel sharper.
When Can You Get It?
The redesign is rolling out today with Google Maps version 25.16 for Android. If you don’t see it yet, check the Play Store for updates. It should show up soon.
For now, it’s Android-only. But don’t worry — if you’re on an iPhone or iPad, Google will likely push the update your way pretty soon too.
Final Thoughts
Even though Google Maps still hasn’t fully embraced Material You’s dynamic color magic (it’s sticking with that teal vibe from last year), this redesign makes the app feel a lot more modern. It’s clean, smooth, and easy on the eyes.
Google Maps is quietly turning into one of Google’s best-looking apps. And this update proves it’s the little details that really make a difference.
