Our classroom is finally getting a serious technological boost—and it’s no longer all about tablets and smartboards. Kira Learning, an edtech company led by AI researcher and Google Brain founder Andrew Ng, is changing the game when it comes to how students learn and teachers instruct by deploying AI-driven teaching assistants.
These AI agents are designed to ease teachers’ burdens by automating tedious tasks such as grading, lesson planning, and performance analysis. Beyond digital assistants, Kira’s AI can also offer one-on-one tutoring and construct data-driven insights that enable teachers to better understand students’ needs.

Kira’s ultimate mission is clear: empower teachers to focus on teaching, not administrative tasks. Andrew Ng, who has long advocated for AI’s transformative power, emphasized that AI is redefining what it means to be a great educator.
With schools rushing to address workforce needs by adding new subjects such as computer science, teachers themselves are frequently called upon to teach subjects beyond their own expertise. That’s where Kira comes in.
Initially rolled out in 2021 to aid computer science education, Kira now extends to aid all subjects in classrooms across the country.

Collaborating With Schools Across the US
Kira’s AI-based platform had already made a splash with its rollout in Tennessee, where it went to all public middle and high schools. It’s since been taken up by hundreds of school districts. With its growth beyond computer science, Kira is becoming ubiquitous among teachers across subjects.
According to Business Insider, the platform is fully functional as a standalone LMS or incorporated into existing infrastructure, making it easier for schools to unify their tech stacks and reduce the high costs of specialized software.
Smarter AI for Deeper Learning
What distinguishes Kira is its method of AI-powered learning. Rather than merely providing answers, Kira invites students to “struggle productively.” Its technology constructs individualized learning maps based on student performance and introduces friction at precisely the right learning moments, replicating the give-and-take of human instruction.
Cofounder and VP of AI Jagriti Agrawal points to this shift as an opportunity for teachers and students to learn alongside one another. It’s a paradigm shift — one where AI is a companion partner in the classroom, not merely a quick route to answers.
EdTech That’s Built to Scale
With more and more schools embracing adaptive learning technology and Learning Management Systems (LMS), Kira’s scalable platform stands to become an integral tool in education.
In a 2022 EdWeek survey, 94% of school districts use LMS software today, and many are looking to consolidate and streamline their digital tools.
