Say Hello to Gemini: Google’s Next-Gen AI Assistant Takes Over

Google has announced that it will replace Google Assistant with Gemini on Android phones later this year. The transition will happen gradually, with more users being upgraded to Gemini in the coming months. Once the process is complete, Google Assistant will no longer be available on most mobile devices or in app stores.

Gemini Expanding to More Devices

In addition to smartphones, Google plans to extend Gemini’s reach to other platforms currently using Assistant. The company confirmed that it will upgrade tablets, cars, and connected devices like headphones and smartwatches to use Gemini instead of Assistant.

Google is also working on a new Gemini-powered experience for home devices, including:

Smart speakers (e.g., Google Nest Audio)
Smart displays (e.g., Nest Hub)
TVs with Google TV or Android TV

This means that Assistant will no longer be supported on these devices, and users will have to rely on Gemini for voice commands and AI assistance.

Enhancements to Gemini

To ensure a smooth transition, Google has added several new features to Gemini on Android. Some of these features were previously exclusive to Assistant, but are now being integrated into Gemini, including:

Music playback support – Users can ask Gemini to play songs on their favorite streaming services.
Timers and reminders – A key feature missing from Gemini at launch is now available.
Lock screen actions – Users can now interact with Gemini without unlocking their phones.

Google says these improvements will make Gemini a more capable and user-friendly assistant.

Why Google is Making the Switch

The decision to replace Assistant with Gemini is not surprising. Earlier this year, Google launched the Pixel 9 series with Gemini as the default assistant, signaling a major shift.

Google claims Gemini is smarter and more advanced than Assistant, offering features like:

Gemini Live – A more conversational AI experience.
Deep Research – A tool that gathers in-depth information on topics.

By moving to Gemini, Google aims to provide a more powerful AI experience across all its devices and services.
