OpenAI launches Operator to carry out online tasks for users

OpenAI has unveiled its latest innovation, Operator, a generative AI service designed to handle online tasks on behalf of users. Acting as a personal digital assistant, Operator can navigate websites, interact with graphical user interfaces, and perform tasks such as filling out forms, ordering groceries, or even creating memes—all without user input. The rollout of Operator will begin gradually, with ChatGPT Pro subscribers in the United States being the first to access the service.

What is Operator capable of?

Operator is designed to perform repetitive and time-consuming browser tasks. OpenAI envisions it as a versatile agent capable of working with popular services like DoorDash, Etsy, Booking.com, Uber, and Instacart. Additionally, Operator can conduct research using trusted media sources, such as the Associated Press and Reuters, providing users with reliable information. By mimicking human interactions with graphical user interfaces (GUIs)—including clicking, typing, and scrolling—it eliminates the need for constant user intervention.

Powered by the CUA model

At the core of Operator is OpenAI’s new CUA model, short for Computer-Using Agent. It merges GPT-4o’s smart vision skills with strong thinking built through learning. The CUA model is trained to work with GUIs as people do, letting it click buttons, pick from menus, and type in text fields. This makes it a strong tool for many kinds of online tasks.

While Operator works alone for many tasks, there are times when users need to step in. For instance, if a password or a code is asked for, the AI pauses and lets users add it. Also, when Operator finds a task it cannot finish, it stops and lets the user take over.
