According to a recent report from South Korea, Apple and Samsung are preparing to introduce slimmer flagship smartphones this year. These upcoming devices, the iPhone 17 Air and Samsung Galaxy S25 Slim, are set to redefine the high-end smartphone market with their sleek designs and competitive pricing.

iPhone 17 Air replaces the Plus model

Apple is reportedly discontinuing its iPhone Plus line, with the iPhone 17 Air replacing the iPhone 16 Plus. The change follows years of underwhelming sales for the Plus models. Interestingly, the new device is expected to maintain the same price point as its predecessor, offering enhanced design without a higher cost.

The iPhone 17 Air will feature a slim profile and measure 6.25 mm thick. While this is slightly thicker than earlier rumours suggested, it still places the device among Apple’s thinnest smartphones to date. The new model will launch alongside the rest of the iPhone 17 series in September.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Slim: A direct rival

Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Slim is also gearing up for its debut, aiming to rival Apple’s iPhone 17 Air in both design and price. At approximately 6.5 mm thick, the Galaxy S25 Slim will feature a similarly slender build. This model is a more affordable alternative to the Galaxy S25 Ultra, slotting between the Ultra and the Galaxy S25+ in Samsung’s lineup.

The Galaxy S25 Slim should make its first appearance at Samsung’s next Unpacked event later this month. However, its availability may not follow immediately, with a few months’ delay anticipated before it hits the market.

Strategic moves by Samsung

Reports suggest that Samsung accelerated the development of the Galaxy S25 Slim after learning about Apple’s plans for the iPhone 17 Air. This indicates a direct effort to compete with Apple in the premium slim smartphone segment, potentially sparking a new trend for ultra-thin flagship devices.
