OpenAI has made ChatGPT Search available to all free users. This feature was first launched in October 2024 for paid subscribers as part of an invitation-only preview called SearchGPT. Now, with this public release, OpenAI aims to improve the user experience by adding real-time search capabilities.
Improved ChatGPT Search Features
As announced by OpenAI, ChatGPT Search makes finding information easier. It delivers quick, up-to-date answers with links to relevant sources. This combines the convenience of a chatbot with the reliability of search engines.
Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer, explained the update in a YouTube video. He highlighted how real-time web access makes ChatGPT more useful for tasks like planning trips or finding news.
This update also prioritizes key links in search results. For instance, searches for movies or hotels show trusted links, like Netflix or booking sites, at the top. These are followed by detailed summaries from ChatGPT.
Voice Search Now Available
A major addition is voice search. Users with Advanced Voice Mode can activate this by tapping the waveform button in the compose bar.

Voice search lets users ask questions hands-free. It covers topics like weather, travel, or recommendations. Responses come from ChatGPT’s Voice Assistant, which offers ten different voice styles. This feature is perfect for quick, on-the-go interactions.
Updates for Mobile Apps
Mobile users also get new features. On iOS and Android, ChatGPT now works with Apple Maps and Google Maps. For example, when searching for nearby restaurants, results will show directly on your map app.

Better Search Engine Integration
Also, users who set ChatGPT as their default search engine will notice faster, smoother browsing. OpenAI has also released a Chrome extension to make it easy to use ChatGPT as your default search tool. This provides instant answers from trusted sources.
Available Now
So, ChatGPT Search is now open to all users through the app and website. The Advanced Voice Search feature will roll out gradually over the next week. OpenAI’s updates make AI-driven assistance more accessible and convenient for everyone.
