The latest update to Android Canary brings a substantial addition to multitasking. Google has introduced a new 90/10 split-screen mode. It is designed for tall screens and offers users more flexibility when using two apps at once.

As reported by Android Authority, In the 90/10 split, one app can take up 90% of the screen and the second app is in the remaining 10%. This is useful when you want to focus on one app but have another app open as well. You can, for example, watch a full-size video while having a chat window or calculator in the corner.

Switching between the two apps is simple. You simply tap on the smaller window, and the two apps swap positions. The app in the smaller area will maximize to take up most of the screen, and the other will minimize. Multitasking is therefore straightforward and fast.

Interestingly, the new 90/10 choice does not replace the old 70/30 split. Instead, it is in addition to it. This is a user feedback-driven move. Developers had originally planned to phase out the 70/30 choice. But a number of users were used to it and did not wish it removed. Google seems to have listened and decided to keep both.

Google Adds New Split-Screen Mode in Android Canary Update

The functionality has been under development since the start of this year. It was originally meant to be released in one of the quarterly Android 16 updates. Now it has arrived in the July update of Android Canary.

In fact, the 90/10 split-screen is already there in the source code of Android 16. That means it’s part of the official build and not just a test. Some versions of Android, like Samsung’s One UI 8, have already included it.

The change reflects Google’s focus on optimizing Android for larger and taller displays. As foldable phones and tablets gain popularity, smarter multitasking is a necessity. The 90/10 layout offers a way of doing more without having to app switch or resize windows constantly.

Users with a penchant for split-screen functionalities will likely appreciate this update. As Android offers increasingly more screen utilization choices, it continues to become more powerful and more convenient than ever.
