WhatsApp Now Uses AI to Summarize Your Unread Messages

WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that allows users to quickly catch up on unread messages. The new feature, called Message Summaries, uses Meta AI to generate summaries of unread messages from your chats. The feature, tested and developed for weeks, is now ready for stable rollout.

WhatsApp Introduces New ‘Message Summaries’ Feature Based on Meta AI

The main purpose of Message Summaries is to save time. Instead of reading long conversations, you can now have a brief summary. To enable it, all you need to do is tap on the number of unread messages in a conversation. WhatsApp will show you a summary of what you have missed. That way, you can stay up to date without reading all the messages.

Privacy remains a key focus. Meta’s Private Processing technology powers these summaries. This ensures that your messages and summaries stay private. According to WhatsApp, not even Meta or WhatsApp staff can read your messages. Also, people in the chat won’t know if you’ve viewed the summary.

The feature is entirely optional. It’s turned off by default. You can turn it on if you want to, and you can choose what chats it applies to. That’s controlled by the “Advanced chat privacy” settings. You have total control over what the AI will be able to see.

Message Summaries is presently only available to US users and in English, although WhatsApp will be expanding it to other nations. Other languages will be introduced later this year.

The release is one aspect of WhatsApp’s overall strategy to roll out AI-enhanced features that make the user experience better without doing so at the cost of privacy. As humans communicate more frequently and in larger depth with one another, features like Message Summaries can prove to be very useful.

Meanwhile, if you’re in the US and use WhatsApp in English, Message Summaries are available to you today. Just make sure your app is at the latest version.

WhatsApp’s move illustrates how AI is being harnessed for everyday ease. And with privacy safeguarding running, it will try to retain user confidence as it brings more advanced tools to the marketplace.
