Apple officially launched iOS 26, the latest version of its iOS operating system for iPhones, at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). The update brings a new look with Apple’s new “Liquid Glass” design and a range of changes in leading apps.
Apple Unveils iOS 26 with Radical Redesign
A significant shift this year is Apple’s naming convention for its iOS releases. Instead of iOS 19, this release is named after the upcoming year, just like car manufacturers. This makes iOS releases now align with the ensuing calendar year.
The system redesign has an impact on numerous things. The lock screen time now stretches horizontally. Safari has an edge-to-edge browsing experience with a tab bar floating over content. There is a more clean appearance in the Camera application with hidden controls.
Apple’s Phone app also includes call screening. This enables the feature to pick up or hold calls for you. Messages also gets better. Users can customize chat backgrounds with personal photos or AI-generated images. Apple’s AI will even propose launching polls in group chats, and typing indicators are coming to group chats.
Emoji-making is enhanced by Genmoji, which allows users to combine two emojis into a single one. There is an added new AI functionality for the Image Playground feature as well, powered by ChatGPT.
Apple Presents iOS 26 with a Bold Liquid Glass Interface
One of the notable additions is Live Translation. The real-time translator is integrated into texts, calls, and FaceTime. It operates within the device itself, keeping conversations private and quick. The feature can be used within apps as well.
Apple Music adds lyrics translation and pronunciation, and AutoMix to flow from one song to another in a DJ-like manner. Maps learns your favorite routes and can alert users to delays. Wallet provides digital ID and upgraded boarding passes.
Finally, Apple brings in a Games app to keep all your games in your library and view what friends are playing. Visual Intelligence allows users to read more from screenshots, including discovering things online or inserting events into calendars.
iOS 26 goes on sale later in the year with Apple Intelligence deeply integrated, building on last year’s iOS 18 AI features.
