Oppo, the renowned Chinese smartphone manufacturer, has expanded its A5 lineup with the introduction of two new models: the Oppo A5 and the Oppo A5 Energy Edition. These additions follow the launch of the Oppo A5 Pro in China towards the end of 2024. With these latest releases, Oppo aims to cater to a broader audience by offering a mix of high-end features and affordability. Let’s take a closer look at what each of these models brings to the table.

Oppo A5: A Feature-Packed Mid-Range Contender

The Oppo A5 is powered by the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 chipset, ensuring a smooth and responsive user experience. It features a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a Full HD+ resolution and an impressive 120 Hz refresh rate, making it ideal for multimedia consumption and gaming. The front of the device houses an 8 MP selfie camera neatly placed within a single punch-hole cutout, while the under-display fingerprint scanner provides seamless biometric authentication.

On the back, the Oppo A5 sports a distinctive quad-circle camera island. However, only two of these circles house actual cameras—a 50 MP primary sensor and a 2 MP portrait lens. The third circle contains an LED flash, while the fourth is purely aesthetic, adding to the phone’s sleek design.

One of the standout features of the Oppo A5 is its massive 6,500 mAh battery, which supports 45W fast charging, ensuring extended usage without frequent recharging. The device also comes with IP69 certification, making it resistant to dust and water. Additionally, Oppo has integrated 360-degree NFC for enhanced connectivity. Running on ColorOS 15, based on Android 15, users can expect a smooth and intuitive software experience.

Weighing just 185 grams and measuring 7.65 mm in thickness, the Oppo A5 is a slim yet powerful smartphone. It is available in three stylish colors: Zircon Black (with a purple hue), Crystal Diamond (a pinkish shade), and Blue. Pricing varies based on storage configurations:

Oppo A5 Energy Edition: A More Affordable Alternative

For those looking for a budget-friendly option, Oppo offers the A5 Energy Edition. This device is essentially the same as the Oppo A5 Pro sold in the Republic of China, though not to be confused with the Oppo A5 Pro in the People’s Republic of China.

Under the hood, the A5 Energy Edition is equipped with the Dimensity 6300 chipset, making it slightly less powerful than the standard A5. It features a 6.67-inch LCD display with an HD+ resolution, which, while not as sharp as the AMOLED on the A5, still provides a decent viewing experience.

The rear camera setup mirrors that of the Oppo A5, featuring a 50 MP primary lens and a 2 MP portrait sensor. However, the battery capacity sees a slight downgrade, coming in at 5,800 mAh. Though it still supports 45W wired fast charging.

Oppo has retained key features such as ColorOS 15, 360-degree NFC, and IP69 certification. Additionally, the company emphasizes the phone’s military-grade durability, ensuring it can withstand harsh conditions.

The Oppo A5 Energy Edition is available in three color variants: Amber Black (a brownish shade), Jade Green, and Agate Powder (a pink gradient). Pricing for different storage configurations is as follows:

  • 8GB + 256GB – CNY1,199 ($165/€150)
  • 12GB + 256GB – CNY1,399 ($195/€175)
  • 12GB + 512GB – CNY1,599 ($220/€200)

Final Thoughts

With the introduction of the A5 and A5 Energy Edition, Oppo continues to offer a diverse range of smartphones catering to different price segments. The A5 stands out with its AMOLED display, powerful Snapdragon chipset, and massive battery, while the A5 Energy Edition serves as a more affordable alternative with solid performance and essential features. Whether you’re looking for a premium mid-range smartphone or a budget-friendly option, Oppo’s latest releases offer compelling choices.
