OpenAI Launches GPT-4.5: Smarter, More Accurate, and More Natural
Frederick Nyame
February 28, 2025
OpenAI has officially launched GPT-4.5, a new version of its ChatGPT model. This update brings better accuracy, fewer mistakes, and a more natural way of talking. However, OpenAI says GPT-4.5 is not its most advanced model. That title still belongs to its o3 reasoning model, which remains the company’s most powerful AI for now.
OpenAI describes GPT-4.5 as a research preview, meaning it is still being tested. The company plans to introduce GPT-5 later this year. GPT-5 will be a single AI model that can handle both quick responses and complex reasoning without switching between different AI versions.
For now, GPT-4.5 is here as an upgrade to GPT-4o, improving response quality, reducing hallucinations, and making AI conversations feel smoother.
What’s New in GPT-4.5?
OpenAI has improved several key areas in this update:
- More Accurate – GPT-4.5 gives better and more reliable answers.
- Fewer Mistakes – It reduces errors and incorrect information.
- More Natural Responses – The model sounds more human-like and engaging.
- Shorter, Clearer Replies – It avoids overly long or complicated answers.
- More Emotionally Intelligent – GPT-4.5 can understand tone better, making it easier to hold natural conversations.
Unlike previous versions, GPT-4.5 also encourages ongoing discussions instead of just giving direct answers. It tries to make conversations feel smoother and more interactive, something OpenAI is focusing on to improve the user experience.
Who Can Use GPT-4.5?
Not everyone can access GPT-4.5 right away. OpenAI is rolling it out in stages:
- Starting Today – Available for Pro users ($200/month plan).
- Next Week – Expanding to ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) and Team users.
- The Following Week – Available for Enterprise and educational users.
By rolling out the update slowly, OpenAI can test the model in real-world use cases and ensure a smooth transition.
For those interested in the deeper technical details, OpenAI has also released a 30-page system card that explains the improvements and limitations of ChatGPT-4.5.

Former OpenAI Leaders Start New AI Companies
While OpenAI continues to evolve, several former executives and researchers have left to start their own AI companies. These startups have already raised billions of dollars and are working on their own AI breakthroughs.
Thinking Machines Lab
Mira Murati, former Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at OpenAI, has launched Thinking Machines Lab. The company focuses on multimodal AI, which means AI that can understand and process text, images, and speech together.
What It Aims to Do:
- Make AI more customizable for users.
- Develop AI that collaborates with humans instead of replacing them.
- Expand AI beyond programming and math to more fields.
Thinking Machines Lab is currently raising $1 billion at a $9 billion valuation to develop its technology.
Safe Superintelligence (SSI)
Ilya Sutskever, former Chief Scientist at OpenAI, has co-founded Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI) with a strong focus on AI safety. The company’s sole mission is to develop a safe and powerful superintelligence.
Goals of SSI:
- Build superintelligent AI that is also safe.
- Ensure AI safety keeps up with AI’s rapid advancements.
- Create AI that can scale responsibly without risks.
SSI raised $1 billion in September 2024 and is now seeking another $1 billion at a $30 billion valuation.
Eureka Labs: AI for Education
Andrej Karpathy, a former OpenAI research scientist and Tesla AI leader, has started Eureka Labs. This company aims to revolutionize education using AI by creating intelligent learning platforms.
What Eureka Labs Does:
- Uses AI-powered tutors to help students learn.
- Personalizes learning experiences for each student.
- Offers both online and in-person learning options.
Their first project, LLM101n, is a course that teaches students how to build their own AI models. The goal is to make AI education more accessible and hands-on.
The Future of AI: What’s Next?
The AI industry is evolving rapidly. OpenAI is pushing forward with GPT-4.5, making ChatGPT more accurate, engaging, and useful. Meanwhile, former OpenAI leaders are launching new AI companies focused on custom AI, safe AI, and AI-powered education.
With GPT-5 on the horizon and billions being invested in AI startups, the race to develop smarter, safer, and more personalized AI is well underway. The next few months will be critical in shaping how AI will impact daily life, work, and education.
