WhatsApp is taking big steps to catch up with Google Calendar and other scheduling apps, as it adds the ability to create events within one-on-one chats. From polls and “Add Your Stickers” in November to this new in-chat event feature, the messaging platform is here for a new ride for everyone.
It has been possible in group chats and communities, but now this feature is also being rolled out to some beta testers through the latest version of WhatsApp beta from the Google Play Store.

Until now, WhatsApp users could only schedule events in group conversations or community discussions. But the latest update that WaBetaInfo shared brings this functionality to private messages, making it easier to plan meetings, set reminders, and manage personal schedules—all without needing a separate calendar app.
From the looks of it, WhatsApp is finding a spot to “seriously” compete with popular digital scheduling apps. This could open the possibility that people could someday use it as an alternative to Google Calendar.

How WhatsApp’s Event Feature Works
With the event feature on WhatsApp, users can do the following things, GSM Arena writes in its latest report:
- Schedule meetings directly in one-on-one chats.
- Set reminders about deadlines, appointments, or dates.
- Keep track of commitments without having to switch between apps.
- Link events for calls—voice and video—without switching between apps.
For instance, if you and your colleague have a common deadline, you can create an event in your chat, ensuring that both of you receive reminders simultaneously. When an event invitation is sent, the recipient has the option to accept or decline, making collaboration more efficient.
WhatsApp’s Growing Utility Beyond Messaging
WhatsApp has been developing beyond its core messaging capabilities, adding business tools, payment options, and now, event scheduling. This feature will be integrated into private chats, making WhatsApp a more comprehensive platform for personal and professional communication.
Unlike traditional calendar apps, that require multiple services to be switched, all these events are placed in the same conversation by WhatsApp’s event feature. This could be a new game-changer in terms of managing time for professionals or anyone who wants to make better scheduling more intuitive.
When Will This Feature Be Available?
As with any beta feature, it will likely be months or even weeks before the rollout extends out to all users. However, the fact that it is being tested indicates that such a full deployment will not be too far in the future.
For now, beta testers using the latest WhatsApp version from the Google Play Store can explore this new feature. If the testing phase goes smoothly, expect to see this functionality available to all users in a future update.
Will WhatsApp Replace Google Calendar?
While event scheduling on WhatsApp will not replace full-fledged calendar apps, it will allow users to manage their time in the most used app. By merging event planning with personal chats, WhatsApp will make an excellent case for becoming an all-in-one tool for communication and scheduling.
In the meantime, you can utilize the new Music Status update feature that will bring you in your MSN or MySpace days. It’s worth a shot if you’re craving for a nostalgic touch within the app.
