Generative AI has caused a massive controversy during its first outing about its hallucinations where it shares fake news to users, and it has caught up with Cupertino’s Apple Intelligence, particularly its notification summaries feature. This was noted by BBC News in several instances where Apple’s proprietary AI shares hallucinations that bring misinformation about real reports.
Despite this massive issue from Apple Intelligence, there have been suggestions from users regarding how to fix this problem on Cupertino’s generative AI, but it will be a hard one as they are requesting to take it down.
Apple Intelligence Hallucinations? Fake News on Notification Summaries
BBC News shared that there had been two instances where Apple Intelligence generated fake news about their articles on the notification summary feature where the AI fabricated misinformation based on the real write-ups they made. Apple Intelligence has a feature known for summarizing notifications, and if you are subscribed to newsletters or notifications about news stories, including BBC, there is a possibility that the AI would mix up the information.
It was noted by the reports that Apple Intelligence’s fake news is only seen when it summarizes notifications regarding news articles, but when viewing each card on the stack, there is no issue.
That being said, this can still mislead readers as many tend to read the notification’s headline or short description only, and when they get the gist of it, some do not go to the main article anymore.

Users Suggest to Take Feature Down as Fix for Misinformation
There have been users who are suggesting a fix for Apple Intelligence’s problems, with Six Colors’ Jason Snell (via 9to5Mac) suggesting that Cupertino should take down the notification summary feature for now until the issue is resolved. It is known that many of Apple’s rivals who faced hallucination issues during launch took down their generative AI platforms including Google’s Bard and Gemini, Microsoft’s Bing and Copilot (particularly its AI recall), and other platforms.
Apple Intelligence’s Generative AI Capabilities
Apple Intelligence was made available to eligible devices as early as October 2024, but it was not widely available to users for at least several weeks because of the waitlist and still missed out on key features for the tech. However, in December, Apple shared a massive upgrade with iOS 18.2’s release where it included more features for users to enjoy like Genmoji, Image Playground, ChatGPT, and more.
There have been several intuitive features from Apple which was made available to their take on generative AI, and this includes the Writing Tools which help create content for users in a chatbot-style experience. It allows users to get an experience that is akin to ghostwriters where it can generate essays, write-ups, emails, and more text content directly from Siri and Apple’s built-in apps.
It is true that Apple Intelligence indeed went far with the features available to the first-party devices where it fully utilized its exclusive apps and experiences to its advantage, but its executives still consider it to be behind its rivals. That claim is now proven correct as Apple Intelligence is facing the usual problems of chatbots, and this involves hallucinating fake news on notification summaries, with users claiming that the only real fix is to take it down for now.
