Honor Might Be Prepping a Flagship with Dual 200MP Cameras—Industry’s First

Honor could be preparing to upend the flagship camera wars. According to a new leak, the company is reportedly developing a smartphone with not one, but two 200-megapixel cameras, marking what could be an industry first. The leak, shared by well-known tipster Fixed Focus Digital, didn’t confirm the model name. But if the branding follows past trends, the device could very well launch as the Honor Magic 8 Ultra, putting it in direct competition with heavyweights like the Galaxy S26 Ultra, Xiaomi 16 Ultra, and Vivo X300 Ultra.

Honor’s Imaging Ambitions Get Even Bolder

The rumored Magic 8 Ultra would build on Honor’s consistent push in mobile photography. Devices like the Magic 7 RSR Porsche Edition already packed powerful telephoto setups. But this time, Honor is seemingly doubling down—literally—with a dual 200MP configuration, likely combining a wide-angle main sensor with a 200MP periscope telephoto.

That kind of setup could break new ground in zoom and clarity. We’ve seen other brands hit that 200MP mark with a single periscope sensor—most notably Xiaomi, Vivo, and even Honor itself. But two high-resolution sensors working together? That’s a new lane entirely.

While exact sensor sizes and specs remain under wraps, it’s expected that one of them—likely the periscope—will feature extended optical zoom, potentially reaching 100x AI-assisted digital zoom, similar to previous Honor tech. Given the company’s track record with its Super Zoom algorithm, improvements in low-light performance and clarity are likely in the pipeline.

AI, Optics, and the Push for Practical Innovation

In a recent public appearance, Honor’s Chief Imaging Engineer, Luo Wei, addressed the rumors head-on. Some online chatter suggested the company might debut a 1-inch sensor or experiment with dual-lens-per-sensor designs. Luo shut that down quickly, calling those ideas overcomplicated and missing the point. Instead, he laid out Honor’s actual focus: enhancing features where AI can’t replace hardware, improving functions that are powered by AI, and building tools where AI amplifies camera performance rather than compensates for weaknesses.

Luo didn’t mince words. He claimed that within the next three years, Honor’s lead in mobile imaging will be “hard to catch.”

Honor Magic 7 Ultra: Launch Timeline and Strategy

So, when can we expect to see this device? Honor is  launching the Magic 8 and Magic 8 Pro in October, both packing the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 chipset. The rumored Magic 8 Ultra—or whatever it ends up being called—could either debut alongside them or take center stage in a separate flagship event later in the year.

With competitors pushing increasingly extreme camera hardware, it’s clear that Honor doesn’t plan to sit quietly on the sidelines. If the dual 200MP setup becomes reality, it may force rivals to rethink their 2025 camera strategies entirely.
