Sony Cuts Back Its Smartphone Business in Europe

Sony is scaling down its smartphone business in Europe, starting with Finland. A local tech report from Finland has confirmed that the company’s newest phone, the Xperia 1 VII, is no longer available through Sony’s Finnish website or its usual retail partners. Instead, Sony says it wants to focus more on online sales. The company claims that selling phones through online platforms will give customers a smoother buying experience. This news comes barely a week after a Finnish-based company, HMD, the licensee of Nokia, broke the news that they were reducing their presence in the U.S due to economic and political restrictions.

Not Just Finland, Other Countries Affected Too

The changes are not limited to Finland. Across many parts of Europe, Sony’s latest Xperia 1 VII is missing from official online stores. Only a few countries, like Germany and the UK, still show the phone listed. That’s a sign that Sony might be cutting back its smartphone business across the whole region, not just in one or two markets.

Online-Only Strategy May Not Be Enough

Sony says the Xperia 1 VII can still be bought online, either from its own website or through Amazon. It just means that fans around the world, especially in Europe, won’t have the chance to see and touch the phone without placing an order. Because the new device is an expensive flagship, it may discourage fans from purchasing it. Also, with fewer places selling the phone, it might be harder to get support, repairs, or even accessories.

Trouble at Home

Sony isn’t just having problems in Europe. The Xperia 1 VII hasn’t had an easy start in Japan, Sony’s home country. There have been reports of weak sales and some technical issues. Sony isn’t just experiencing problems at home, but overseas. This shows that the problem runs deep.

Right now, Sony hasn’t said it’s quitting the smartphone business altogether. But this move to reduce its presence in Europe raises questions about the future of Xperia phones.

Sony may find it more difficult to compete as more consumers choose companies like Apple, Samsung, and even smaller Android manufacturers. Whether its online-only approach succeeds or if this marks the start of Xperia’s demise in Europe will only become clear with time.
