OpenAI’s AI-only focus is already deviating based on new reports as it is now reportedly planning to deliver a social media platform experience to its users.
As of writing, none of the rumored plans have been made official, but based on recent reports, OpenAI is planning to deliver a platform similar to what Elon Musk’s X is offering, with both companies’ executives known for their beef with one another.
OpenAI Plans to Create an X-like Social Media
According to a new report by The Verge (via Engadget), multiple sources have come forward to reveal OpenAI’s latest plans to create its version of a social media platform that is heavily based on its rival, X.
Currently, OpenAI is still reportedly in the early stages of the project and still working on conceptualizing this platform, but it already reportedly has an internal prototype in the works.
Based on the sources’ claims, OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman is currently consulting with outsiders to get feedback regarding this project and has been doing this privately.

As per the sources, the internal prototype that is currently being developed centers on ChatGPT’s latest trending feature, the built-in image generator, but the twist is it will have a social feed.
There is still no official word on whether or not this will be part of the ChatGPT platform, but this prototype gives hints as to what OpenAI will have available in the future.
OpenAI and Its Rivalry With Elon Musk
Altman and Musk were once on the same page as the latter once served as the AI company’s investor and held a seat on its board of directors, which he all left behind in 2018. It was reportedly due to the differing views, particularly as Musk reportedly wanted more control of the company. He likewise voiced his disagreement over the company’s plans to be “for profit.”
However, it was later revealed by OpenAI that Musk was once on board with the massive changes to the company’s nonprofit status with email receipts that show communications with Musk when he was still part of the team. In the past year, Musk has filed and rescinded his lawsuit against OpenAI, and then re-filed the injunction in late 2024 in hopes to stop its for-profit transition.
It is known that, while Musk completed an acquisition of Twitter, which he then transformed into X, the executive has also explored the world of artificial intelligence with the establishment of xAI.
Later on, Musk and xAI launched Grok AI to the X platform that combined both AI experiences and social media, with its main rival being Meta and Meta AI.
