Tesla Exodus 2025: Used Tesla Listings Hit Record High as Owners Ditch EV Giant

Tesla’s tumultuous 2025 is taking a nosedive, with fresh figures showing a record-breaking number of existing Tesla owners dropping the now-disgraced electric car brand. Elon Musk might be hurting the brand because of political ties, but there’s so much more to discover about the plummeting resale prices of EV units.

The worst part is that the prices of the used units are projected to depreciate even lower.

As reported by Autorader parent firm Cox Automotive via Sherwood, over 13,000 used Teslas were available on the platform in the last week of March 2025 — a whopping 67% year-over-year increase. This is the most Tesla EVs ever listed on the used platform.

In contrast to standard market fluctuations, this trend is rooted specifically in Tesla’s problem. The report verifies that no other prominent automobile manufacturer experienced a similar jump in used vehicle listings, illustrating that the problem lies solely in Tesla’s waning popularity.

Dropping Tesla Resale Value

The increase in used Tesla listings has been linked to a quick fall in resale prices. With inventory swimming on the market, used Teslas are losing value rapidly. The Tesla Model Y, which is one of the most popular models for the company, has dropped an average of $6,000 in resale value over the last year, according to Forbes.

It’s important to note that this trend of price depreciation displays no indication of slowing, and since thousands of additional Teslas enter the used market each week, the prices are bound to go even lower. No wonder it’s an alarming indication for both existing owners and potential buyers.

New Tesla Sales Crash Globally

The news isn’t any better on the new car side. In Germany, one of Tesla’s most important markets, new car sales have dropped by 76%, according to Mashable.

Even Tesla’s latest model, the much-hyped Cybertruck, has had owners trying to trade theirs in en masse, so much so that the company has been said to start denying some trade-ins.

Brand Backlash Linked to Politics of Elon Musk

More and more of Tesla’s former loyal customers are abandoning the brand, not because of the vehicles themselves, but because of Elon Musk’s increasingly polarizing political role.

His close association with President Donald Trump and his participation in slashing federal funding for vital health and global programs through his DOGE initiative have driven away a large segment of the brand’s customer base.

In November, some Tesla owners created anti-Musk stickers to distance themselves from Elon and his brand.

Some protesters went far in spreading their anti-Tesla sentiment. Last month, critics slammed the company with vandals after Musk claimed that Tesla is a “peaceful company” to begin with.
