Google has announced a new feature called battery health assistance for pixel smartphones, starting with Pixel 9A which will be released on 10th April. It will later be integrated into other models of pixel smartphones. This feature is designed to prolong the use of the batteries by altering how they are charged the longer it is kept. With software updates now reaching seven years, this technology will allow users to maximize their phones for years to come.

How It Works

As the phone gets older, Battery Health Assistant controls the battery’s voltage. This process begings after charging the battery 200 times through to 1000 charge cycles. It also automatically adjusts the charging speed to match the battery’s current condition. Google is doing this in order to slow down wearing of batteries and prolong the phone’s lifespan.

How It Affects Battery Life

As the phone keeps getting older, its endurance per charge will also decrease. Charging speed may also decrease a bit. Howeer, these minor changes help avoid overheating and other forms of damages. This helps the battery remain stable and also retain longer working time. All lithium-ion batteries wear out over time. For this reason, Apple also has a similar battery management system for iPhones.

Battery Lifespan for Pixel Phones

Google says the Pixel 8a and newer models should still have 80% of their original battery capacity after 1000 charge cycles. Older models, like the Pixel 3a to Pixel 8 Pro, are expected to keep 80% capacity after 800 cycles. The new feature could help extend battery life even further.

Who Can Use This Feature?

Google says Battery Health Assistance will roll out later this year. On the Pixel 9a, the feature is automatic and cannot be turned off. However, users with older Pixel models will have the option to enable or disable it.

More Battery Features in Android 16

Android 16 will also introduce more battery-related tools, including:

  • A battery health percentage estimate
  • An option to limit charging to 80%
  • A cycle count tracker

Final Thoughts

Google’s new feature aims to help Pixel users maintain their batteries for as long as possible. This could reduce the need for early replacements and improve long-term performance.
