OpenAI Temporarily Limits ChatGPT’s AI Image Generation, CEO Claims Their GPUs Are ‘Melting’

The most recent update on ChatGPT gave it the ability to offer AI image generation right on the chatbot platform, but that is now getting temporary limits because of the problems that OpenAI came across.

It has been recently revealed by none other than OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, that the company’s GPUs are already “melting” from the massive use of ChatGPT’s latest feature.

Instead of designating ChatGPT as a text-only output platform paired with its multimodal features, OpenAI has recently given it the capabilities to also give AI-generated images like what DALL-E offers.

OpenAI Temporarily Limits ChatGPT’s AI Image Generation

A new post shared by Sam Altman on X reveals that the company is now putting its foot down on the massive AI image generation capabilities of ChatGPT as the company is now running into problems. It was revealed by Altman that access to the AI image creation feature by ChatGPT is being temporarily limited as the company will look on ways to avoid further issues.

According to Altman, the limit will help manage the load ChatGPT receives from the global use of its new feature as an unexpectedly large number of users began creating photos from scratch without the need to use DALL-E.

ChatGPT’s AI image generation did not have any limits when the company released it earlier this week, but now, Free tier users will only get three image generations per day to manage the load.

Altman: OpenAI GPUs Are ‘Melting’ With New Feature

it's super fun seeing people love images in chatgpt.

but our GPUs are melting.

we are going to temporarily introduce some rate limits while we work on making it more efficient. hopefully won't be long!

chatgpt free tier will get 3 generations per day soon.

According to OpenAI’s CEO, as much as he is enjoying seeing the public engage heavily with ChatGPT and use its AI image generation feature, this phenomenon is already causing their GPUs to melt.

The goal now for OpenAI is to make this AI image generation feature more efficient than before, so it avoids heating up uncontrollably and causing damage to GPUs.

OpenAI: New Generative AI Features to Enjoy

There is no denying that artificial intelligence is everywhere at present, and it is still growing at an incredible pace as many companies are competing to get more AI-related experiences out to the public.

For OpenAI, it has continuously developed its ChatGPT models, with the upcoming GPT-4.5 update looking to set new standards with better emotional intelligence and more features.

OpenAI designated ChatGPT as its main AI app, and its recent update which added AI image generation only has it missing out on one specific feature, and that is AI video generation that is still exclusive to Sora.

That being said, the company has recently expanded its Deep Research Tool, and while it still requires a paid subscription, more users may now take advantage of the more scholarly and academic version of the chatbot.

Massive plans are still underway from OpenAI to deliver more advancements to its AI experiences that will be available soon to the public, and this includes the more powerful GPT-5 that will also feature the o3 reasoning model.
