Xiaomi 16 Series Adopts Flat Screens with LIPO for Uniform Bezels

Tech insider Kartikey Singh recently shared news about Xiaomi’s upcoming flagship phones. According to the latest New Product Introduction (NPI) link, both the Xiaomi 16 Pro and Xiaomi 16 Ultra will feature flat screens. This is a big shift from Xiaomi’s previous curved screen designs. The entire Xiaomi 16 series will also use LIPO technology.

Xiaomi 16 Series to Feature Straight Screens and LIPO Technology

Singh revealed that Xiaomi is moving away from its four-micro-curved screen design. The Xiaomi 16 Pro and 16 Ultra will now have flat screens, measuring around 6.8 inches. Meanwhile, the standard Xiaomi 16 will keep its 6.3-inch flat screen.

This is a major change for Xiaomi. It marks the first time since the Xiaomi 9 that a flagship in the digital series has used a flat screen. Some users speculated that this shift was a way to cut costs.

Not About Cost: LIPO Technology Explained

Singh confirmed that the decision was not about cost-cutting. Instead, the entire Xiaomi 16 series will use LIPO (Low-Injection Pressure Overmolding) technology. This is an advanced and expensive screen packaging method.

LIPO technology allows for ultra-thin bezels. Xiaomi aims to reduce the black border to less than 1.1mm. The total width, including the frame, will be around 1.2mm. The result is a sleek and uniform design with equal-width bezels on all sides.

LIPO is an advanced display packaging technique. It uses liquid polymer materials to encase the display. These materials are then solidified, seamlessly integrating the screen, bezel, and frame. This method reduces bezel size and strengthens display wiring.

Apple first introduced LIPO technology with the iPhone 15 Pro. It helped narrow the phone’s border to just 1.5mm. Android brands like OPPO (Find X8) and Xiaomi (Xiaomi 15) have also used this technology.
