China-based AI startup DeepSeek has released its latest language model, DeepSeek-V3-0324. It is licensed under MIT and available for free download on Hugging Face. The model is open for both personal and commercial use.
DeepSeek-V3-0324 : A Powerful Yet Accessible Model
DeepSeek-V3-0324 is 641 gigabytes in size. It runs efficiently on consumer hardware, including Mac Studio with Apple’s M3 Ultra chip. The model has 685 billion parameters, making it one of the largest open-source AI models.
AI researcher Xeophon believes it can compete with Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 3.5. Unlike Sonnet, which requires a paid subscription, DeepSeek-V3-0324 is completely free. This gives it a major advantage in accessibility.
Smarter and More Efficient with MoE Architecture

DeepSeek-V3-0324 uses a Mixture of Experts (MoE) architecture. Instead of activating all parameters at once, it uses only the most relevant ones. Out of 685 billion parameters, only 37 billion are active at any time.
This reduces computational demands while maintaining performance. In tests, DeepSeek-V3-0324 performed as well as models with larger activations. This makes it faster and more efficient.
New Features for Better Performance
The model introduces two key innovations:
With these features, the model’s output speed increases by 80%. Apple researcher Awni Hannun reported that tests on Mac Studio showed speeds of 20 tokens per second.
A Change in Communication Style
Users have noticed a shift in tone. Earlier DeepSeek models had a human-like, conversational style. The new version is more formal and technical. This makes it ideal for research, coding, and enterprise use.
DeepSeek’s Impact on AI Competition
DeepSeek-V3-0324 increases competition in the AI industry. By offering a powerful, free alternative to subscription-based models, DeepSeek is reshaping the landscape.
