Xfer Records unveils Serum 2 after 11 years wait with major upgrades

Xfer Records has introduced Serum 2, the next-generation update to its widely used wavetable synthesizer. With a completely redesigned synthesis engine and expanded creative tools, this latest version builds on the legacy of its predecessor while adding powerful new features. Released on March 17, 2025, Serum 2 arrives as a free upgrade for existing users, reinforcing Xfer Records’ commitment to long-term support.

Expanded synthesis capabilities

Serum 2 introduces a more advanced oscillator system, offering new ways to manipulate sound. The updated wavetable oscillator now includes additional warp modes and refined phase distortion, allowing for smoother transitions between waveforms. A multisample oscillator expands the instrument’s capabilities by supporting SFZ-format samples, making it possible to recreate real-world instruments with greater realism.

The new sample oscillator with loop and mod tools adds more ways to mix recorded sound into tracks. Also, a granular oscillator now lets users stretch and shape samples for rich textures. The spectral oscillator allows real-time harmonic work and peak spot, giving more control over tone shaping. These updates keep the best of the first Serum while opening new sound paths.

Enhanced effects and modulation

A full new effects engine gives more sound-shaping power, with multi-band steps and more routing choices. With convolution reverb and Bode shift, users can now use more complex tools than before. The new effects also have three separate channels, letting users layer sounds. Plus, the LFO engine now has more shapes to pick from. Four macro controls add more real-time tweaks.

Serum 2 now has an arp and a clip sequencer, moving past just synth into making full tracks. These new tools let users craft rich rhythms and shifting tunes without outside gear. With these adds, Serum 2 grows from a synth to a full music-making tool.

The update comes with a large set of presets and wavetables, giving quick ideas to start with. Over 626 presets and 288 wavetables are in the pack, giving users a wide range of sounds to tweak. The bigger library means users can jump right into making music without starting from zero.

Price and availability

Serum 2 is available at an introductory price of $189, with the cost set to rise to $249 after June 1, 2025. For existing Serum users, the upgrade is entirely free, reinforcing Xfer Records’ commitment to long-term support.

With more synth options, better effects, and new sequencer tools, Serum 2 is a big step up while keeping the core that made the first one a must-have. By mixing new ideas with ease of use, Xfer has made Serum 2 a key tool for both pros and new users who want to push sound design further.
