Snap, Snapchat’s parent company, has introduced new AR features for its Spectacles, which include a virtual keyboard and GPS for users.
Snap Spectacles: New AR Features Bring Virtual Keyboard, GPS
The latest release from Snap is in celebration of the six months since their fifth-generation Spectacles was revealed. One of Spectacles’ new features centers on GPS technology, specifically the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), compass heading, and custom locations.
On the other hand, the company has also introduced new hand-tracking capabilities that help make its AR-based virtual keyboard possible, featuring a full and numeric layout that takes typing to the next level.

Snap Spectacles Are Not Yet Widely Available For Now
Snap has collaborated with various companies to expand their Lenses for the Spectacles, including the likes of Niantic, Wabisabi, and more.
However, it should be noted that the 5th-gen Spectacles is not yet publicly available as it is only offered to developers who can only rent it out for a minimum of a year at $99 per month.
The ‘True’ AR Development and Race
The quest for “true” augmented reality wearables is still in its development stages as companies like Apple, Meta, Snap, and more are reportedly working on delivering this in the real-world setting.
Rumors have claimed that Apple is now looking to trump Meta at its game with its development of new “smart glasses” that focuses on AR.
Last year, Meta announced during its Connect event that it is in the process of developing its first and “true” AR glasses that are dubbed “Orion.” However, it is still in its prototype stage as of writing and is not yet ready for public availability or use.
Meta and Ray-Ban’s Smart Glasses, as well as Snap’s Spectacles, are early examples of how these companies plan to integrate AR into everyday wearables.
