YouTube Bug Launches Shorts Automatically If Last Opened—Is There a Fix for This?

There are now reports about a bug found on the YouTube app as many users claim that Shorts is automatically launching when they reopen the app. Normally, the main homepage will be the first thing you see when you open the app, but users who last used Shorts are now reporting that it launches automatically upon the app being reopened.

Users have shared their latest problems on YouTube’s app and Shorts via Reddit, and the claims are the issue has been going on for several weeks now. One Redditor claimed that upon opening YouTube, they were surprised by a “very loud and annoying blare” from their device that came from a Shorts video despite them not opening Shorts.

Users are now calling for YouTube to fix the issue, and some users who are subscribed to YouTube Premium have also reported experiencing similar issues, which shows that the bug does not only happen to Free users.

As of press time, it remains unclear if a similar issue is plaguing iOS users as reports have come from Android users.

Here’s How to Fix YouTube Shorts Bug

According to 9to5Google, there is one solution for those who are on Android, and users only have to reset the app by clearing its stored data (storage) and cache to have YouTube launch normally.

However, it has been noted that opening Shorts again and leaving it as the last opened feature will bring users back to square one.

YouTube Shorts and Its Features

When TikTok alternatives spawned, YouTube was among the first to put forth its contender. The experience grew exponentially over the years and by 2024, the feature saw as much as 70 billion views per day amidst efforts to ban TikTok.

While it is not as extensive as TikTok, YouTube has given Shorts many features for the public to enjoy, particularly for content creators who are allocated a maximum duration of three minutes for their uploads.
