Meta Expands AI Integration: WhatsApp to Get Dedicated Meta AI Widget That You Can Turn Off

Meta is doubling down on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) across all its platforms, with WhatsApp being the latest to get a standalone Meta AI widget. Last time, WhatsApp joined Meta’s Accounts Center for seamless sharing of status updates across any Meta platform.

The new functionality is intended to bring AI assistance within reach without even needing to open the app. But with worries over AI intrusiveness already on the rise, is this a game-changer or simply an unwanted extra?

Meta AI has been consistently growing in WhatsApp, from a floating action button to search bar integration and in-chat tagging for group chats. With the latest addition of a specific widget discovered by WaBetaInfo, users will now have direct access to AI-driven features from their home screens.

This widget will enable users to conduct text-based searches, engage with Meta AI hands-free using just voice commands, and utilize a camera for picture-related queries.

According to TechRadar, the goal is to reduce friction and ensure users can access AI-powered assistance without needing to open WhatsApp. Instead of switching to platforms like ChatGPT or Perplexity, users can now get responses directly from Meta AI with a single tap.

Convenience or Unnecessary Clutter?

Though Meta sells this as a huge convenience, user uptake is still split. Some view it as a natural means of engaging with AI, while others perceive it as an overbearing effort to insert AI into daily conversations. WhatsApp users have already complained about the increasing presence of Meta AI, with some griping about its intrusiveness in chats.

With the lukewarm reception, Meta’s attempt to further integrate AI is putting the question of whether users necessarily need AI assistants built into their messaging platforms—or if it’s simply another business initiative for adopting AI.

Is Meta AI Dismissible?

For those who do not want to clutter their experience, the silver lining is that Meta AI can still be turned off. The user will go to Settings, and Chats and switch off the Meta AI button, eliminating the feature from their WhatsApp experience.

But whether this feature still exists in future releases is a gamble. As Android Police reports, the new AI widget design is still in beta so changes are still expected to arrive.

If Meta continues highlighting AI adoption, the option to turn it off could become increasingly less accessible or even be eliminated altogether.

Meta’s AI Strategy: Succeeding with Users or Spinning Its Wheels?

WhatsApp with its more than two billion monthly active users provides a huge chance for Meta to drive AI penetration. Even if just a segment of its users use Meta AI, that’s a big success in the struggle for AI superiority.

But if most users choose to opt-out or opt it out altogether, it may follow the path of other Meta experiments—like Facebook’s push to popularize the Metaverse.

In June 2024, Meta announced its plans to bring the Meta AI chatbot with Llama 3 models to WhatsApp.
