The new Steam Hardware Survey figures are in, and the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 has officially taken its place as the most widely used graphics card by Steam users.
This is an extension of Nvidia’s historic stronghold on the PC gaming industry, building on the success of the RTX 3060 and the iconic GTX 1060.

Nvidia’s 60-series graphics cards have been the PC gamer’s first choice for years. Its specs are just top-notch over the other existing video game graphics cards. The GTX 1060 reigned supreme for a long time, with the RTX 3060 finally taking its place in October 2023, according to PCGamesN.
The RTX 4060 has now usurped its predecessor, proving Nvidia’s dominance of the mid-range GPU segment.
Based on the latest survey, RTX 4060 experienced a sharp 3.97% jump in usage during the previous month, and it now claims 8.57% of all GPUs employed by surveyed Steam users. RTX 3060 is in the second spot with a share of 6.87%. These figures illustrate how rapidly gamers are embracing Nvidia’s newest products.

Steam Hardware Survey: A Reliable Indicator of GPU Popularity
Although the Steam Hardware Survey is not a conclusive industry-wide ranking, it is still a compelling predictor of GPU trends. With a user base exceeding 40 million active Steam users, the survey gives a significant insight into the gaming preferences of PC gamers across the globe.
More importantly, this monthly survey by Valve monitors different hardware parts, such as the most sought-after gaming GPUs, CPUs, operating systems, and even VR headset usage. These statistics enable manufacturers and enthusiasts to measure the condition of PC gaming hardware.
Booming Demand for Nvidia’s RTX 4000 Series
Aside from the RTX 4060 taking the top spot, some other RTX 4000 series GPUs experienced significant increases:
The RTX 4070 rose by 2.54%, now holding fourth position with a 5.43% market share. There’s also a 1.6% jump for the RTX 4070 Super. However, the RTX 4060 (laptop version) tells a different story after dropping by 0.91%.
These observations indicate that gamers are gradually making their way to Nvidia’s new generation of graphics cards driven by improved performance, power efficiency, and the increasing use of ray tracing in contemporary games.
AMD and Intel Struggle to Gain Ground
The most recent survey findings picture a tough road for Nvidia competitors. AMD particularly experienced little improvement, with merely one of its GPUs—the Radeon RX 6750 GRE—registering a slight 0.1% boost in adoption.
No stand-alone Intel Arc GPUs made it onto the list whatsoever, underscoring all the more the dominance of Nvidia in the marketplace.
Further, AMD experienced a dip in CPU usage, falling by 5.12%, while Intel CPUs increased by 5.14%. This suggests that even with AMD’s competitive Ryzen processors, Intel is still the favorite among PC gamers.
No RTX 5000 Series GPUs in the Rankings Yet
Despite all the hype about the impending RTX 5090 and the just-released RTX 5070 Ti, none of Nvidia’s new 50-series GPUs have appeared on the Steam Hardware Survey. This is probably because they are not readily available, highly sought after, and priced at a premium. But as inventories settle, we can expect these GPUs to make an appearance in the rankings within the next few months.
Conversely, AMD’s recent release of the RX 9070 XT may disrupt the status quo, providing a competitive option to Nvidia’s top-of-the-line GPUs. Whether it will be able to challenge Nvidia’s supremacy is yet to be determined.
The swift uptake of Nvidia’s newest GPUs speaks volumes about the company’s capacity to provide performance and value that appeals to gamers.
