Tech Giants Qualcomm and MediaTek Enter the 6G Race

The race for 6G is heating up. Two major players, Qualcomm and MediaTek, are now focusing on developing and standardizing this next-generation technology. While competitors in the chipset market, they are working toward a common goal: shaping the future of 6G.

Qualcomm and MediaTek Drive 6G Innovation

Samsung and Arm announced their 6G efforts last year. Now, Qualcomm and MediaTek are making big moves. Each company collaborates with different partners, bringing diverse innovations to the table.

So, at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 in Barcelona, Qualcomm reaffirmed its commitment to 6G. The company is working closely with Nokia Bell Labs and Rhode & Schwarz to refine its vision. A key focus is artificial intelligence (AI). Qualcomm expects future networks to learn and adapt using AI-driven protocols. These smart networks will adjust parameters in real-time for better efficiency.

In addition, Qualcomm predicts that 2025 will mark the start of 6G standardization. MediaTek agrees. The Taiwanese company is showcasing several breakthrough technologies. These include hybrid computing, a live low Earth orbit (LEO) broadband NR-NTN trial, sub-band full duplex (SBFD), and the new M90 5G Advanced modem.

MediaTek’s 6G Strategy

Additionally, MediaTek is making strides in 6G. At MWC 2025, company president Joe Chen highlighted their focus on connectivity and AI. He emphasized their goal of improving everyday life through innovative technology.

To accelerate its 6G efforts, MediaTek is partnering with NVIDIA, Intel, and G REIGNS. These collaborations will enhance hybrid computing, a critical component of future networks. MediaTek will demonstrate its Hybrid Computing technology. This system merges device cloud and radio access network (RAN) into an “edge cloud,” forming a key element of 6G infrastructure.

The Impact of SBFD Technology

One standout technology from MediaTek is sub-band full duplex (SBFD). This advancement applies to both 5G-Advanced and 6G. SBFD enhances uplink coverage and reduces latency. MediaTek developed this with Keysight to solve self-interference issues. This problem occurs in smartphones due to the close proximity of transmitting and receiving antennas.
