Reddit outage frustrates users across the United States

Reddit users in the United States faced issues accessing the platform on Thursday, with many reporting that the app was not working properly. According to Down Detector, a service that tracks outages through user reports, there was a significant spike in complaints about Reddit. Many users turned to X (formerly Twitter) to share their frustrations, posting about their inability to access communities or browse content.

Some made lighthearted jokes, while others complained about the inconvenience. One user posted, “Well this is a lie. Why do these status pages always lie? Reddit down, can’t access most communities,” along with a screenshot of an error page.

Another user humorously commented, “Reddit is down and now I have to actually get off my phone and enjoy life? This sucks ass,” highlighting how deeply integrated the platform is in people’s daily routines. Others mentioned their reliance on Reddit for finding old discussions and answers to life’s questions.

Extent of the outage and reported issues

According to Down Detector, the outage peaked when over 150 users simultaneously reported problems. Among those affected, 61% stated they were experiencing issues with the Reddit app, while 36% cited server connection problems. These figures suggest that the outage primarily affected mobile users rather than the desktop site.

Reddit has yet to provide an official explanation for the outage. While temporary disruptions are not uncommon, widespread service failures tend to spark quick reactions from the platform’s dedicated user base.

This is not the first time Reddit has faced an outage. Over the years, the platform has experienced occasional disruptions due to server overload, technical issues, or maintenance work. In most cases, service is restored within hours. However, prolonged outages can frustrate users who rely on the platform for news, discussions, and entertainment.

As of now, there is no official timeline for when full service will be restored. Users experiencing difficulties can check Reddit’s official status page or Down Detector for updates. Meanwhile, many are turning to alternative platforms to pass the time while waiting for Reddit to return. For now, Reddit users will have to be patient or, as some joked, find other ways to spend their free time.
