Powered by two Nvidia Drive AGX Orin chips, the ES90 will be Volvo’s most powerful car when it comes to computing capability, changing the limits of what can be achieved in AI-based safety, battery control, and performance tuning.

The ES90 will be the first car in Volvo’s lineup to feature Nvidia’s next-generation system-on-a-chip technology, which is capable of processing an unprecedented 508 trillion operations per second (TOPS). This amount of computing power is what makes AI-based active safety features, upgraded car sensor capabilities, and battery efficiency possible—all of which go into a more intelligent, safer, and more responsive drive.

Volvo says that this new system is an 8x boost in processing capability from earlier generation cars based on Nvidia’s Xavier chipset. This extraordinary boost in computation speed will enable the deep learning model and the neural network to grow from 40 million to 200 million parameters, enabling further precision of the car’s automated driving and safety features.

Superset Tech Stack is the Future of Volvo’s Smart Cars

The ES90 is based on Volvo’s SPA2 platform, the second vehicle to utilize the company’s Superset tech stack after the EX90. According to The Verge, the modular platform is intended to simplify vehicle development, making production more efficient while enabling Volvo to continually update software features through over-the-air (OTA) updates.

Volvo is Setting the Bar Higher Than Tesla

Tesla broke ground on the idea of software-upgradeable cars, and now Volvo is upping the ante with its own vision for the connected car future.

The EX90 was Volvo’s initial big move in this direction, but software problems held it back and resulted in features that didn’t make the cut. Volvo’s new Superset framework is here to address those shortcomings, though, and provide a smooth, always-better ownership experience.

With the ES90, Volvo imagines real-time software updates that can enhance including the driver assistance technology, battery performance and range, safety and crash prevention algorithms, and infotainment and in-car experience improvements.

Volvo’s Vision for the ES90

Anders Bell, Volvo’s Chief Engineering and Technology Officer, stressed that the ES90 is one of the most technologically advanced cars on the road today—and it will just keep getting better.

“With our cutting-edge Superset tech stack as its foundation, the Volvo ES90 prioritizes safety,” Bell said.

Combining AI-driven computing, real-time software updates, and Nvidia’s leading processing capability, the ES90 will set new standards for luxury EV performance and safety.

Volvo’s venture into AI-infused EVs is simply just the beginning. For tech-minded individuals, modern cars are not just used for transportation alone. They could operate like supercomputers with the help of AI.

Back in June, Volvo’s EV production shifted from China to Belgium following the import tariffs imposed by Beijing.
