Google Blocks Over 2 Million Risky Android Apps in 2024

Google has significantly ramped up its efforts to protect Android users from malicious apps, blocking a staggering 2.36 million risky app submissions from the Play Store in 2024. This marks an increase from previous years, showcasing the tech giant’s commitment to improving cybersecurity. Alongside the blocked apps, Google also banned 158,000 developer accounts that attempted to distribute malware and spyware.

“Today, over 92% of our human reviews for harmful apps are AI-assisted, allowing us to take quicker and more accurate action to help prevent harmful apps from becoming available on Google Play,” the company said.

“That’s enabled us to stop more bad apps than ever from reaching users through the Play Store, protecting users from harmful or malicious apps before they can cause any damage.”

A Growing Threat: Malicious Apps on the Rise

The number of malicious apps blocked by Google has been steadily increasing over the years. In 2023, the company blocked 2.28 million apps, and in 2022, it stopped 1.5 million. Similarly, the number of banned developer accounts has fluctuated, with 333,000 accounts banned in 2023 and 173,000 in 2022. This upward trend highlights the growing sophistication of cybercriminals and the need for stronger defences.
