Google Pulls Pixel 4a Updates After Serious Battery Issues

January 27, 2025
In early 2025, Google launched a new Pixel 4a Battery Performance Program. This program includes an Android 13 update, free battery replacements, and financial compensation options. However, many users are unhappy with the update’s effects on their devices.
Pixel 4a: Google Removes Old Updates
Google has removed all previous Pixel 4a software updates. The only available update now is TQ3A.230805.001.S2, released on January 22. This update includes “battery management features.” Users cannot download older versions, as Google seems intent on preventing rollbacks.

Update Reduces Battery Performance
The Android 13 update reduces the battery’s capacity and affects charging. Google warns the update may cause phones to drain faster and charge slower. It also changes how the phone displays battery levels.
The update is automatically downloaded if your phone is connected to the internet and charging. Many users report negative experiences after installing it. Some find their devices don’t last as long. Others feel forced to use their phones while plugged in to avoid sudden shutdowns.
One user, Ramona J. Royer, said:
“The battery update seems to be a way to force people to get a new phone. I liked my phone, but now the battery doesn’t hold a charge if you’re using it. It takes about 45 minutes to go from 100% to 25%. It charges faster, but only if I don’t use it.”
Free Repairs Come with Strings
Google offers free battery replacements for affected devices. However, phones must first pass an inspection. Many users report being told to pay for other repairs during the process. For some, this feels unfair, especially since the Pixel 4a was released in 2020.
Compensation Options
If replacing the battery isn’t an option, Google offers two alternatives:
- A $50 USD payout (or equivalent in your currency).
- A $100 Google Store discount for purchasing a new Pixel phone.
Conclusion
Google’s battery program aims to address aging devices but has sparked controversy. The forced update and removal of older versions frustrate many users. While Google’s efforts to help are appreciated, the execution has left much to be desired.
