The latest release from Google is looking to challenge Duolingo at its game as the former is now offering a way for users to learn new languages easily.
Google Looks to Challenge Duolingo With New Tools
Google Labs has released new tools for those wanting to learn new languages. According to CNET, there are now three new tools that Google has recently included in their experimental platform that offer users a chance to engage in different language learning exercises to hone their skills in multilingual conversations.
Duolingo is best known as one of the top apps for language learning, and the company has recently claimed that it is now focusing on an “AI first” approach to its platform that would help expand its capabilities.
Google, on the other hand, is expanding its AI development to help users learn new languages via Gemini, with the said new tools now offering ways to experience these for free via Labs.

The three tools include Tiny Lesson, Slang Hang, and Word Cam, which have different experimental experiences for language learning.
First, Tiny Lesson will ask users to describe their situation and then the AI will bring grammar and vocabulary lessons that will help explain their problem to a local. Next, Slang Hang focuses more on teaching casual conversations to users that will help them better converse with foreign nationals less formally.
Lastly, Word Cam takes advantage of the camera, which users may use point at an object, and have the AI identify it using the local name to help in learning.
That being said, there are other AI tools from Labs that help with language learning like the previous one called Little Language Lessons.
Artificial Intelligence and Language Learning
Learning a new language is challenging enough for users, even with the presence of many apps offering to help teach new languages to people. There have been many companies that have worked on AI translation tools that can also teach their users new languages along the way, with Meta doing it for users with the Seamless M4T platform.
Others have focused on integrating AI-powered language translation tools for the social part of their platform, and it looks to help global users stay connected and informed despite being from different parts of the planet. “Roblox,” for example, has added a real-time AI chat translator that helps international gamers better understand each other and connect to anyone in their friends list or public chats.
Other companies are working on creating apps or programs that would help in real-time translation for users, making it the first step in learning more about other languages in this day and age.
While there have been various apps that have done this, the emergence of generative AI has helped expedite the experiences for users, inching closer to breaking the language barrier worldwide.
