YouTube is altering its video player for the first time in over a decade. The company started rolling out a new player for its web version. Currently, only a small portion of users can observe the changes through A/B testing.

YouTube Redesigns Its Video Player After 10 Years

The new design uses Google’s Material Design 3 look. The look has been in use on other Google services already. Now, the video player has control buttons that seem transparent, making it look newer and more modern.

Each control button, for example, play or settings, has its own capsule-shaped compartment. The interface looks cleaner, simpler, and more intuitive to use with this design.

One of the biggest changes is the volume controls. The volume button was in the lower left. Now it’s in the lower right. Tapping on it brings up a vertical slider instead of the old horizontal bar. This change aims to make the situation more comfortable and natural to change the volume.

So, not every change has been well-liked. In the old layout, the volume could be changed via the up and down arrow keys. This shortcut is not present in the new layout. Most users who use this shortcut do not like the change. YouTube is basing the decisions for the new design on the feedback from this small test. YouTube may still change the design prior to full release, depending on the reaction of users.

Generally, the redesign of YouTube is all about making the player look cleaner and feel more modern. Some will love the new design, and others will prefer the old familiar layout. What do you think of these changes? Are they for the better or for the worse? Share your opinion with us in the comments!
