Oscars Takes a ‘No Stance’ on Generative AI Use in Film: Won’t ‘Help nor Harm’ Nomination Chances

Generative AI has shocked the world with its capabilities to create and manipulate content, and this has been the issue with the most recent Oscars, and the Academy is now addressing how it will adapt to the tech’s presence.

However, the recent update in its award rules and regulations revealed that the Academy is taking “no stance” when it comes to the use of generative AI in films.

The recent Academy Awards saw two films admitting to having used generative AI to change several key aspects of their artists’ performance, leading to many raising the issue of the technology’s use for movies.

Oscars Takes a ‘No Stance’ in Gen. AI Use in Film

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences shared in their latest update that they are taking a “no stance” (via Engadget) in the use of generative AI in films for the upcoming 98th Oscars. With this, the Academy shared the recent changes to its outline for voting in the next edition of the awards, which will take place on March 15, 2026.

The organization claimed that it is still prioritizing human involvement in the production of films as, but it is not that pressed when it comes to the use of generative AI in submissions.

This follows the recent issues behind the 2024 Best Picture nominees, including “The Brutalist” and “Emilia Pérez,” which previously admitted to having used generative AI in their production to alter performances.

They came under fire from the general public and did not win the coveted award.

Using Gen. AI Won’t ‘Help or Harm’ Nomination

According to the Academy, generative AI and other tools used in making the films will “neither help nor harm” their chances in getting a nomination for a category they applied for.

“The Academy and each branch will judge the achievement, taking into account the degree to which a human was at the heart of the creative authorship when choosing which movie to award,” said the Academy.

Generative AI Use in Entertainment Media

Throughout the past years, generative AI has proven that it is powerful enough to create songs out of prompts, lyrics out of thin air, and performances that could be as good as the real deal.

In the film world, studios have long used the practice of using artificial intelligence to revive deceased artists to reprise their roles or give out one final performance. It has also been used to de-age artists if they are still alive.

Apart from AI’s use in film, the music industry was also taken by surprise when a trending AI-made song made top charts. Many resorted to bashing it and Spotify even removed AI-generated music, there are many that also supported it.

However, the 2024 GRAMMY Awards reinforced its stand to only allow human-made songs to be eligible for a nomination and a win, kicking out “Heart on My Sleeve,” which was made using AI.

The decision centers on the massive controversy surrounding AI as companies that train their models have allegedly used unlicensed data to achieve its capabilities, especially with performances readily available online.

Today, there is still a mixed stance on whether or not to allow these generative AI technologies to be in the same league as human-made ones, especially for award-giving bodies.
