Microsoft warns of update issues with Citrix software

Microsoft has confirmed installation problems with its January Patch for Windows 10 and Windows 11. The issue specifically affects systems running the Citrix Session Recording Agent (SRA) version 2411. This issue disrupts the enterprise environment and users have been reporting the error.

Issue during the update installation

The error emerges during the final phase of the update process. The affected systems download and begin installing the updates without issue. However, an error message appears upon the final restart. The system will then display a message that says

“Something hasn’t gone as planned. Don’t worry – the changes will be reversed.”

Consequently, the update is rolled back, leaving the system unchanged.

Cause of the problem

Citrix says the issue is due to incompatibility with some driver files. This bug affects only the new Citrix SRA, made in Nov 2024. The company claims that it does not affect older versions of the software. The Citrix SRA is used by firms to track and check user work in Citrix apps. Home users, who do not use this tool, are safe from the bug.

Temporary solution for enterprises

The company has provided a workaround for brands needing to install the updates while using SRA 2411. The steps involve:

  • Disabling the Citrix Session Recording Monitor Service.
  • Installing the Microsoft security update.
  • Reactivating the Citrix service.
  • Citrix has made detailed instructions, including PowerShell commands, available in a support document to guide IT administrators through the process.

    Affected Windows versions

The issue impacts the following fully supported Windows versions:

    • Windows Server 2019, 2022, and 2025
    • Windows 11 (versions 24H2, 23H2, and 22H2)
    • Windows 10 version 22H2

Microsoft and Citrix are working together to develop a permanent solution. Until then, IT admins are encouraged to implement interim measures. This will ensure that critical security updates can be installed without disrupting its services. Please note that this error does not affect home users. However, enterprises that rely on Citrix software should proceed with caution. This is necessary to avoid complications arising from the updates.
